HVAC UV light brands we install
At Global Heating & Cooling, we install only the strongest germicidal UV light products. That’s why we recommend the following HVAC UV lamp brands to our customers:
- Air Scrubber
Want to install a specific brand? We can probably do that. Let your technician know and they’ll be able to tell you whether or not the brand you have in mind will work for your needs.
How germicidal UV lights work
Germicidal UV lamps sterilize microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc.) to prevent them from growing inside your HVAC system.
See, microorganisms like dark, wet environments. This makes your HVAC system, especially around the condensate drain pan and cool evaporator coil, the ideal home for microorganisms.
The UV light will emit rays of UV-C light that either kill or disable microorganisms, making them unable to reproduce.
Types of HVAC UV lights
You can choose between 2 types of germicidal UV lamps: return duct air purifiers and coil mounted sterilizers. Both products have the same functionality, sterilizing microbial activity in your HVAC system, but each has a different purpose:
- Germicidal UV air purifiers: These units sit inside your return air duct to sterilize contaminants before they pass through your HVAC system. For the best air filtration, we recommend pairing a UV air purifier with a media filter. (UV lights sterilize microorganisms, but won’t remove them from your home’s air.)
- Coil mounted UV sterilizers: Placed near your evaporator coil in the supply duct, these units bathe the cooling coil in UV light to prevent microbial growth and sterilize contaminants after they pass through your HVAC system.
Signs you need a UV light
You’d probably benefit from a UV light for your air conditioner if:
- Someone in your family has allergies or respiratory problems. Mold spores and other pathogens can irritate allergy and asthma symptoms. With proper filtration, the UV light will sterilize the microorganisms, and then your system’s air filter will capture them.
- You live in a warm, humid climate. In hot, humid places like Ohio, your air conditioner is being used, which means it’s cold and wet, for several months out of the year. That means your system is more at risk of getting mold than cooler places that don’t need as much air conditioning.
- A mold specialist told you mold is growing inside your HVAC system. You’ll need to first get the mold removed by a mold remediation specialist. Installing a germicidal UV light afterward will prevent mold from coming back into your HVAC system. We also recommend getting regular HVAC tune-ups because a tech will inspect your system for microorganisms, catching the problem before it gets worse.
Improve Your Home’s Indoor Air Quality
Proper filtration of both the air in your home and incoming ventilation air is key to removing particulates from the air. The EPA has named indoor air pollution as one of the top five environmental risks to public health and with the amount of time spent indoors, it’s no wonder so many of us suffer from allergies, asthma and other illnesses.
Global now offers Aprilaire MERV 16 Allergy & Asthma Filters that provide the highest rate of effectiveness against airborne particles.
